Can you Bury a shipping container in the ground?

There have been many photos and images on the internet showing this being done. They look nice and the project seems easy and straightforward. However, what many folks do not know is the structural engineering on the shipping container. These boxes were not built to be buried, they were built to be stackable and transportable. Therefore the support system on these boxes is built in. Built into the corner posts from a stackable point of view, not the side walls force coming inward. 

I personally do not support the burying of shipping containers.
